Phillip Allen Obituary
26 Jamuary 1948 - 08 March 2026

Captain Phillip K. Allen Jr., USNR (Ret.), of Seattle, WA, passed away peacefully on 8 March 2026, after a brief illness.

“Phil” was born on 26 January 1948 in Birmingham, AL, to Phillip Kenneth Allen ’48 and Florence Lucille (Auringer). Phil spent much of his childhood in Baltimore, MD.

A proud graduate of the Naval Academy Class of 1970, he went on to complete Navy flight training in Pensacola, FL. Phil later served with the Wizards of Electronic Attack Squadron 133 (VAQ-133) flying the EA-6B Prowler during deployment on board FORRESTAL (CV-59) in 1979.

He was honorably discharged from active duty in October 1980 and remained in the Naval Reserve until his retirement as a captain. After his active-duty Navy career, Phil continued his flying career as an MD-80 pilot for Alaska Airlines and served for many years as the Seattle Blue and Gold Officer Area Coordinator. He retired from Alaska Airlines after 28 years.

Phil married Barbara Barnes in 1982. During their time together, Phil and Barb traveled extensively around the world. Phil often said that his favorite place they ever visited was the Galapagos Islands. An athlete for much of his life, he was a competitive swimmer in high school and played lacrosse. While in the Navy and at Alaska Airlines, Phil often spent his free-time long distance running and snow skiing.

Phil is survived by his three siblings, Bonnie Chalker, David Allen and Scott Allen. He was predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Barbara Barnes Allen.

Per Phil’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, please direct any memorial gifts to The Galapagos Conservancy (www.galapagos.org).

Following his retirement, Doug enjoyed woodworking and making furniture.
